The Arc Michigan facilitates a statewide network of local chapters assisting persons with developmental disabilities and their families through education, training, technical assistance and advocacy.

The vision of The Arc Michigan is that all people realize and fulfill their dreams of having employment, education, meaningful relationships, and living independently within their community.

Mission Statement
The mission of The Arc Michigan is to ensure that people with Developmental Disabilities are valued in order that they and their families can participate fully in and contribute to their community.

All people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have strengths, abilities, and inherent value; are equal before the law; and must be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of the level of their disability.

Community Participation

The Arc Michigan works toward ensuring that all people have the fundamental moral, civil, and constitutional rights and opportunities to live, learn, work, play and worship in communities of their choosing.

Purpose Statement
The Arc Michigan will carry out its vision and mission through:
  • Advocacy
    • Influence state and federal legislators
    • Influence state and federal policymakers, administrators and others
    • Host an annual state legislative day
    • Establish federal legislative priorities by teaming with the national Arc
    • Promote the closure of the Mt. Pleasant Center and ensure appropriate support and services for current residents
  • Leadership
    • Establish legislative priorities and develop issue briefs and position statements
    • Develop information and tools that assist Arc members and allies in seeking political office at all levels
    • Identify and/or create materials for state and local Arcs chapter management, growth and board development
    • Build collegial relationships with local Arc chapters
    • Develop and strengthen partnerships with other agencies
  • Communication
    • Assure local Arc chapters have effective tools to influence the legislature
    • Distribute effective tools for the management, growth and board development of local Arc chapters
    • Disseminate information and tools to Arc members, parents, caregivers and persons with disabilities to advocate for themselves and those they represent
    • Share information on leading innovations and practices to Arc membership
    • Provide timely communication to membership on important issues
    • Develop a campaign to inform healthcare workers about Arc services
    • Align Web site and other internal communication media with vision and mission
    • Expand external media coverage
