The Arc Collaborative

The Arc Collaborative of Southeast Michigan, the seven Arc chapters in Southeast Michigan, will assure that children and adults with disabilities can successfully access and utilize the crisis and basic needs support systems available to them and address a way of mobilizing community assets and partners to bring together the fragmented pieces of the service delivery system. The strategies will build on and complement one another as system navigators build relationships with and between the service systems to effect systems change.

SafeLink offers free cell phone service

This is a U.S. government-sponsored program that provides a free cell phone and 68 minutes per month of phone time to income-eligible folks, including those receiving SSI, food assistance and Housing Choice Vouchers. Eligible persons can enroll via the web, but there is also a phone number, 800 977-3768.

Instead of receiving a monthly telephone bill for your traditional Lifeline service, SafeLink converts the total amount of discounted service (approximately $13.50 of discounted telephone service) into minutes (68 minutes) each month. SafeLink Wireless Service does not cost anything – there are no contracts, no recurring fees and no monthly charges. Participants in the program are subject to annual verification. SafeLink will only accept one request per mailing address.                                Info added December 2009

Social Security Disability Benefits

The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs are the largest of several Federal programs that provide assistance to people with disabilities. While these two programs are different in many ways, both are administered by the Social Security Administration and only individuals who have a disability and meet medical criteria may qualify for benefits under either program.  Links added December 2009.

Social Security Disability Insurance pays benefits to you and certain members of your family if you are "insured," meaning that you worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes.

Supplemental Security Income pays benefits based on financial need.
